Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Freehand and Stenciled Star Decoration, Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones / Greensboro.," Pennsylvania origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a row of freehand spots, vining, and several rows of stripes throughout the front. Midsection with crisp Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling. Base stenciled with a large "3" flanked by stars. A nicely-decorated example, featuring desirable star stenciling. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Georgia. Excellent condition with a faint Y-shaped line on underside, some minor wear to surface, and some flecking of old white paint to surface.
