Scarce Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Water Cooler, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / MANUFACTURER / GREENSBORO. PA.," circa 1875, cylindrical cooler with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, applied lug handles, and rectangular bung hole, featuring Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling surrounded by stenciled flourishes. Shoulder with large stenciled "5" flanked by stenciled foliate designs, between freehand cobalt stripes. Bung hole surrounded by cobalt and flanked by graduated cobalt dashes on each side. A difficult-to-find Hamilton & Jones form. Long, thin crack on one side. Thin Y-shaped crack on underside, continuing onto base in three places. One of these lines continues several inches horizontally along the base. One glazed-over base chip.
