Scarce Stoneware Canning Jar with Graduated Cobalt Stripe Decoration, Stenciled "G.A. & J.E. McCARTHEY / Maysville, Ky.," circa 1875, tapered jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim with wax sealer interior, the front featuring the stenciled advertising "G.A. & J.E. McCARTHEY / Maysville, Ky.," surrounding a stenciled foliate design. Highly unusual graduated freehand stripes surround the stenciled inscription at its corners. Base and rim with additional freehand stripe decoration. The finest Maysville, Kentucky advertising canning jar we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a forty-year Southern U.S. collection. Excellent condition with some staining and light wear, as well as a small chip on interior of rim and two minor nicks on inner wax sealer rim. H 8 3/8".
