Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Stripe and Floral Decoration, Western PA origin, attributed to the Boughner family, Greensboro, PA, circa 1855-1860, finely-potted pitcher with ovoid body accented with tooled banding around midsection, tall collar with heavily-tooled rim, and ribbed handle. Body of pitcher decorated with brushed cobalt flowers interspersed with a pairs of horizontal and vertical dashes. Collar decorated with wavy cobalt stripes flanking a dashed spout, the rim and base of collar additionally decorated with cobalt stripes. Cobalt dashes along handle and cobalt highlights at handle terminals. Excellent form and decoration. The distinctive color and heavy stripe decoration link the pitcher to the Boughner family. An exceedingly rare form for this maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a forty-year Southern U.S. collection. A few shallow rim chips. Minor spout chips. A 1 1/2" shallow chip to left side of handle. Other shallow chipping at wear to handle. H 10 5/8".
