Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "Jas Hamilton & Co / Greensboro, Pa.," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring James Hamilton maker's stenciling at the base, the entire front profusely-decorated with two rows of freehand vining, three stripes, and a finely-executed script "2" surrounded by spots and flanked by graduated dashes. A striking example. Excellent condition with an in-the-firing base chip and some wear to underside.
