Fine Eight-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Freehand Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, heavily-decorated with a large fuchsia vine design around the top half, brushed between straight and wavy freehand stripes. Stenciled below "HAMILTON AND / JONES, / GREENSBORO. PA." in large letters, further accented with stenciled flourishes. Brushed below with a freehand "8" surrounded by spots and flanked by graduated stripes. Excellent size, decoration, and color. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a forty-year Southern U.S. collection. A 2 3/8" x 2 1/4" restored hole in underside, the damage presumably caused when the jar was used as an umbrella or cane stand. Some additional tight lines surrounding hole in underside. A small chip to end of one handle.
