Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head and large tail, perched on the stump of a tree. Additional slip-trailed shrub accents to base of tree. A good example of a desirable Norton motif. Essentially as-made condition with some in-the-firing separations to handle, a few tan in-the-firing discolored spots to shoulder, a small in-the-firing contact mark to left side of jug's front, and a thin glazed-over base chip.
