Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Leaping Rabbit Decoration, Stamped "NORTON & FENTON / BENNINGTON, Vt," circa 1844-1847, highly ovoid jug with semi-squared spout and ribbed handle, decorated with a brushed design of a rabbit with striped neck and shaded body, leaping over a stylized leaf. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A desirable Norton design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased twenty or more years ago in the New York State area. Some crazing to reverse. A minor chip to underside at edge, presumably in-the-firing. Two tiny nicks to spout. Some staining.
