Exceptional One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1850, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and squared rim, decorated with a large flowering tulip plant extending up the front. Decoration includes heavy leaves, two oversized blossoms extending around the jar's shoulder, and four small blossoms throughout. Shoulder decorated with a swag and hanging flower design on reverse. Excellent, decoration, color, and size. One of the finest Milburn jars we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Mid-Atlantic. Excellent condition with two minor glazed-over base chips, a minor chip to edge of underside, and a shallow chip to top edge. H 10 1/2".
