Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Deer and Stylized Slip-Trailed Decoration, Stamped "J.C. WAELDE / NORTH BAY," New York State origin, circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled cobalt design of a standing deer atop a brushed ground, flanked by slip-trailed vine and spot decorations. Slip-trailed "2" underscored by dashes above. Brushed highlight to maker's mark. Excellent mix of stenciled, slip-trailed, and brushed decorative treatments. One of the finest examples of North Bay stoneware to be offered in recent years. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a fifty-year private collection. Very nice conddition with a crack extending from rim to end of one handle. Iron ping to shoulder on reverse.
