Unusual Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with incised banding, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated with a brushed flowering vine design at the shoulder, three large leaves at the midsection, and flowering vines flanking a "10" at base. Designs are interspersed with four freehand cobalt stripes. A difficult-to-find, large-sized example of the Thompson Pottery's work. One handle with 3 1/4" sliver-shaped loss along bottom edge. A thin 5 3/4" crack from rim on front. Some shallow chips to interior of rim.
