Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "HAUGHT & CO. / SHINNSTON, W. VA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, boldly-decorated with freehand vertical dashes above "HAUGHT & CO." maker's stenciling. This jar features maker's stenciling, in which the name "KNOX" is omitted from the beginning of the stencil, at a time when the partnership of Knox and Haught had presumably ceased. Large script "3" at base flanked by heavy dashes. Freehand stripe at shoulder and large cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A visually-striking example of West Virginia stoneware. A 1" loss to handle, which appears to be in-the-firing. Some light wear to stenciling. A tiny nick to shoulder.
