Rare and Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Eagle Decoration, Stamped "FOELL & ALT, / MANUFACTURERS. / EAST BIRMINGHAM. PA.," circa 1860, semi-ovoid jar with lug handles, decorated with a finely-stenciled design of a Federal eagle holding a banner with stars in its talons. Foell & Alt maker's stenciling above and below. Elaborate freehand flowering vine design at shoulder. Brushed straight and wavy stripes below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed "4" on reverse. The finest example by this early Pittsburgh area maker we have ever offered. Literature: Pictured in Phil Schaltenbrand’s Big Ware Turners, p. 148. The staining visible in the published photo was largely removed since the time the jar was photographed. Excellent condition with a shallow chip to end of one handle, as well as a few chips to underside at edge, which appear to be in-the-firing.
