Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration and 1864 Date, Stamped "O.L. & A.K. BALLARD / BURLINGTON, VT.," keg-form coller with tooled banding a circular bunghole, decorated with a slip-trailed flowering stem with dotted accents to the blossoms. Dated "1864" in cobalt above. Cobalt highlights to banding and surrounding bunghole. Cobalt spots to bunghole. Good form and strong decoration, featuring a desirable Civil War era date. Spidering cracks on left side of cooler. 12" crack from rim on reverse. 5 1/2" surface line to right side of cooler, not visible on interior. Some short lines from rim. Several chips on interior of rim. Some in-the-firing crazing to base.
