Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird and Floral Decoration, New York State origin, possibly Troy, NY, circa 1825, ovoid jug with tooled spout and heavily-ribbed handle, featuring an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird perched in a flowering branch with large leaves and three cluster-shaped blossoms. This design appears to be loosely based on the decorations of George Lent of Troy, NY, but is executed by a less-sophisticated hand. A very folky example. Provenance: Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, deaccessioned from a museum. The jug was donated to the museum in 1974, having been purchased by the donor in the 1930’s from a prominent Connecticut antiques dealer. March’s auction will be the first time this piece will be available on the public market in eighty years.Essentially as-made condition. Glazed-over 1 1/4" iron ping on side of jug. 1 1/8" in-the-firing flake to side of handle. Very minor, glazed-over base nick.
