Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of two pheasants with long tails and spotted breasts, facing each other atop the branches of a tree stump. The double pheasant motif is one of the most highly-prized designs produced by the Nortons. This design on this example is applied in crisp dark cobalt against a light beige ground. Excellent design, color, and maker. Provenance: Recently found in Florida. Spout chips. A fairly-tight 2 3/4" crack from spout. Otherwise excellent condition.
