Twelve-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Federal Eagle Decoration, Stenciled "T.F. REPPERT / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large stenciled Federal eagle with shield, holding arrows in both talons. Stenciled stars above. Front stenciled "T.F. REPPERT. / EAGLE POTTERY / GREENSBORO. PA" with stylized stenciled designs at each corner. Freehand stripes and vining at shoulder. Base inscribed "12" in cobalt, flanked by flourishes. Incised "X" on underside. Excellent size and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Western PA. Essentially as-made condition with some fry to cobalt and a very minor and faint 2 1/2" Y-shaped surface line to left side of shoulder.
