Outstanding Eight-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Pheasant Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1885, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall flaring collar, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a very large pheasant with turned head, spotted body, elaborate tail, and large crest, perched on a stump beside a shrub. Slip-trailed "8" to shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Includes Albany-slip-glazed lid. An extremely rare and visually-appealing design by this popular New York State maker. While many bird designs by John Burger, Jr. exist today, few of this size and decorative quality are known. Some fairly unobtrusive surface flakes to base. 5 1/2" Y-shaped crack from rim. Edge wear and a few chips to lid.
