Very Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Face Jug with Elaborate Painted Surface, possibly North Carolina origin, 20th century, large-sized face jug in the form of an African warrior's head, including large ears and an open mouth with incised teeth, the surface painted black with additional red, cream, and gray tribal face paint and yellow earrings. Spots of white, gold, and red paint to forehead and reverse. Spout fitted with original wire-and-wood bail handle. One of a small number of face jugs, which surfaced in the 1990s, reportedly made by a Mr. Nelson in North Wilkesboro, NC, in the 1920's. Excellent condition with minor wear. Height 14 1/2".
