Rare Shenandoah Valley Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Brushed and Slip-Trailed Cobalt Tulip Decoration, attributed to Andrew Coffman, John Zigler Pottery, Timberville, VA, circa 1830, one-gallon pitcher with tooled collar and rim, decorated with three crisply brushed and slip-trailed tulip plants, each bearing three large blossoms, applied over a slip-coated surface. Collar decorated on both sides with leaves emanating from a four-petaled blossom. Cobalt highlights surrounding handle terminals. Excellent form and stunning decoration, executed with particularly vivid cobalt. One of the finest examples of Timberville stoneware to come to market in many years. Crack extending across underside and 4 3/4" up front of pitcher. 1 1/4" shallow flake to underside at edge, partially visible at base, along with two other minor chips to edge on underside. Some miniscule base nicks on reverse. In-the-firing, glazed-over surface line at base of handle, not visible on interior.
