Very Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1835, squat-shaped ovoid pitcher with tooled shoulder and slightly-flared collar with squared rim, the body decorated with an elaborate brushed cobalt tulip design. Reverse decorated with two leaves in a style typical found on the reverse of Smith stoneware jars. Additional foliate brushwork to collar. Cobalt dashes along spout. Impressed with the desirable Wilkes Street Pottery mark, "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," below a half-gallon capacity mark at midsection. Excellent form, size, and decoration. Missing handle. 1 1/4" x 1" chip on reverse of rim. Spout, rim, and base chips. H 7 1/4".
