Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Dated 1869, Stamped "HUBBELL & CHESEBRO, / GEDDES, N.Y.," ovoid jug with squared spout, profusely-decorated with three slip-trailed flowers accented with dotted trails, above the large date 1869, underscored by dots. Large leaves flank the date. Two large slip-trailed "5"s underscored by graduated dashes to the left and right. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Outstanding decoration. When the jug was sold to the consignor, this imaginative design was described as three water striders on a pond. Provenance: Reportedly purchased directly from the Chesebro estate. According to the jug's original seller, this piece was used as a drinking vessel for a party on Onnadago Lake, held by Hubbell & Chesebro to celebrate their first successful year as business partners. A fight broke out between the two over who would receive a greater share of their profits. The jug was allegedly used by Hubbell to defend himself against Chesebro, and incurred its damage from this altercation. The accuracy of this story cannot be corroborated. Majority of spout broken and reglued. Fry to cobalt.
