Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Detailed Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "HAXSTUN, OTTMAN & CO. / FORT EDWARD, NY," circa 1870, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a highly-unusual slip-trailed design of a large bird with heavily-dashed body, fan-shaped tail, and solid wing, seated atop an elaborate vine. Numerous bird jugs by this firm are known. However, this example is truly special, with a design far-different than the bird motifs typically produced by this firm. Loss to side of spout. Some flecks of wear and light fry to cobalt, primarily visible on the vine. A few very minor nicks to surface and base.
