Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," circa 1810, ovoid jar with slightly-flared rim, decorated on the reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design with splayed leaves. Faint cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Provenance: Recently salvaged from a dump in Virginia. Long curving crack on underside, which extends up side of jar to shoulder, where it forms a large T. Several rim chips. A few small, shallow base chips. Dryness to surface. Salt residue at base.
