Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / STONE-WARE / MANUFACTURER / Manhattan-Wells / NEW-YORK," Clarkson Crolius, Sr., Manhattan, NY, circa 1815, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and open loop handles, decorated with a brushed cobalt drape design accented with dots. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The impressed maker's mark on this example is unusual for Crolius jars of this large size. The majority of Crolius pieces bearing this stamp are small pieces, primarily inkwells and fruit jars. Thin 8 1/2" crack from rim. A few very minor base nicks. A shallow chip to edge of underside.
