Extremely Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird and Flower Decoration, Impressed with Brooklyn, Michigan Advertising, attributed to Samuel Hart, Fulton, NY, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a spotted bird perched on the leaf of flowering plant. Slip-trailed "5" at base. Shoulder impressed with the rare, cobalt-highlighted advertising "COOK AUSTIN & SHERMAN / DEALERS IN DRY GOODS / GROCERIES HARD WARE DRUGS & C / BROOKLYN MICH.". Excellent condition with two faint inverted Y-shaped surface lines to front, not visible on interior. These lines may have occurred in the firing. Some light surface wear to handle edges.
