Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "D. ROBERTS & Co / UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1827-1830, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and large lug handles, decorated with an incised design of a ring-necked bird with heavily-feathered body, standing atop a circular perch. Bright cobalt highlights to bird and maker's mark. Excellent size, maker, and decoration. Likely the finest example of David Roberts stoneware to be offered anywhere in the past several years. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in New York State. Rim chips. Two minor base nicks. Some mottling to clay. A few short surface lines at base on reverse, which probably occurred in the firing. H 10". ($3000-$4000)
