Very Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA," circa 1870, ovoid pitcher with tall collar accented with a tooled rim, the front decorated with a brushed sweeping tulip design in the Swank style. Spout decorated with vertical cobalt swags. Front impressed "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA" above a large half-gallon capacity mark. Rare form and size for this highly-desirable Western Pennsylvania maker. Relatively few signed Swank pitchers are known, and this is the first example we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in Pennsylvania. Several cracks in underside extending up body of pitcher, the longest extending 5 3/4" up front of pitcher. Several nicks to edge on underside, the majority of which appear to be in-the-making. A shallow, glazed-over chip on exterior of rim and two minor nicks on interior of rim. H 8 1/2".
