Exceptional Diminutive Redware Jug with Lead and Manganese Glaze, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO" and Incised on Underside "Made by C.F. Bell / Sept. 19, 1884," pint-sized, ovoid jug with tall spout and applied strap, the surface decorated with sponged manganese and covered in a heavy lead glaze. Underside incised with a rare inscription from potter, Charles Frederick Bell (1840-1899), the son of John Bell, which reads "Made by C.F. Bell Sept 19 1884". Shoulder impressed with "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO" maker's mark. Potted in a rare small size and surviving in remarkable condition, this jug may be one of the final products of the Bells' Waynesboro shop bearing a John Bell maker's mark. An outstanding new discovery in Bell family pottery. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in an attic in North Carolina. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 6".
