Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," circa 1830, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and large tab handles, the front decorated with a wavy vine featuring heavy swags, culminating in a flower blossom. Reverse with four brushed cobalt chain links across the shoulder. Excellent size and form. Literature: Pictured in Eddie L. Wilder, Alexandria, VA Pottery: 1792-1876, p. 141, figs. HCS020 and HCS020a. Heavy chipping to both handles. Small chip to bottom edge of rim on reverse. Some light wear to surface on front and reverse.
