Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Rooster, House, and Fence Decorations, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with lug handles, the front decorated with an elaborate slip-trailed farm scene, including a rooster with turned head, a split-rail fence, and three houses, surrounded by cobalt highlights. An exceptional decoration. In need of restoration with heavy flaking and staining throughout. Fortunately, majority of the flaking on the jar is on the sides and reverse, not affecting the decoration.
