Extremely Rare Three-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped Twice "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER," Clarkson Crolius, Sr., Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, oversized, highly ovoid pitcher with short, narrow collar and applied handle, decorated with an incised and cobalt-filled floral design with large, scalloped leaves and curving stem ending in a flower blossom. Exceptionally-crisp and exacting incising with highly unusual crossing stems. Impressed on each side with Clarkson Crolius, Sr., maker's mark, which reads "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER". Incised decorations on Crolius stoneware are rarely this fine and elaborate. Exceptional form and monumental size. One of the finest examples of signed Crolius stoneware known, and his greatest known pitcher. Provenance: Originally purchased from a Florida antiques dealer over thirty years ago. Rim chips. Thin cracks on reverse, extending up from base. A few base chips. H 15 1/4".
