Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Tulip Decoration, Stamped "BELL," Strasburg, VA origin, ovoid jar with squared rim and ribbed lug handles, the front and back decorated with a large, boldly-brushed tulip plant design bearing three large blossoms. This jar features some of the best-colored decoration on an example of Bell stoneware we have seen. Impressed under one handle "BELL / 5". Provenance: Recently discovered in Southern Maryland. Rim of jar slumped during the firing. Some staining to base area. A few nicks to handles. Tight Y-shaped line on underside, possibly in-the-firing and not visible on interior.
