Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," circa 1830, thin-walled ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles. Front decorated with a large flowering plant featuring unusual oval-shaped blossoms and very rare curved leaves with pointed ends. Reverse decorated with brushed cobalt drapes underscored by leaves. A well-decorated and early example of H.C. Smith stoneware, likely made shortly after the "H. SMITH & CO" stamp was discontinued. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Northern Virginia. Hairlines around base, with one hairline extending 4" up from base. Losses to one handle. Minor chipping to base. In-the-firing piece of clay adhered to right side of jar's front.
