Scarce Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Decoration, attributed to John Crolius, Manhattan, NY, circa 1775-1800, small-sized, highly-ovoid jug with narrow footed base and heavily-tooled spout, decorated with a stylized incised foliate design at the shoulder, highlighted in cobalt slip. Additional cobalt circles around the handle terminals. This jug bears strong similarities to a famous jug in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was made for John Havens, incised I.C. (presumably for John Crolius), and dated 1775. Excellent size. Small base chip and minor in-the-firing stone ping at base. Glazed-over 5/8” stone ping on reverse. H 10”.
