Rare and Elaborate Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Double Pheasant Decoration with New York State Advertising, attributed to J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT., circa 1855, cylindrical jug with rounded shoulder and semi-squared spout, decorated with an artistic design of two very large pheasants with turned heads and very long tails, perched on the branches of a heavily-shaded tree stump. Impressed at the shoulder with the New York State advertising "GEORGE A. FEETER / LITTLE-FALLS, N.Y.". Exceptional figural decoration. One of the Nortons' most iconic designs, appearing unusually large on this example, covering most of the jug's front. Exfoliation to underside. Restored area at base on reverse of jug. Some minor nicks to surface at base on front. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market jug, consigned from the Northeast. H 16 1/4".
