Fine Yale University Stoneware Mug with Elaborate Incised Inscriptions and Figural Designs, Signed and Dated "E.T. Nugent / 1/6/97," semi-ovoid, Albany-slip-glazed mug with applied handle, sgraffito-decorated with the inscription "Yale / BOTTOMS UP" below two crossed pennants. One side with decoration of a cat chasing a dog below the bust of a waitress with tray of liquor, along with the slogan "The best way to keep spirits up is to put spirits down". Underside of handle incised "Eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die". Base of handle dated "1/6/97". Opposite side incised with a design of cupid flanked by a hatted man and woman. Design of a toasting gentleman below, with the inscription "Among good fellows / Every toast will pass / Which serves to carry / Round another gllass (sic)". Underside inscribed "E.T. Nugent". Excellent condition. H 5".
