Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Exuberant Slip-Trailed Flowering Plant Design, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with rounded shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a highly unusual folk art design of a flowering plant, featuring three blossoms composed of spiraling scalloped trails, and several heavily-shaded leaves. This decoration has a strong New York State influence rarely found in Harrisburg stoneware. The use of slip-trailing is also unusual for the maker, with this decorative treatment typically found on earlier Harrisburg products by T.H. Willson or Willson's & Young. This jar features some of the best color contrast one could hope to find on an example of Cowden & Wilcox pottery. The color of the cobalt is truly exceptional, and accentuates the visually-appealing design. Provenance: A recently-discovered example, which descended in a Central Pennsylvania family since its manufacture. Excellent condition with only minor wear.
