Very Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Pitcher with Squat Form, attributed to Henry Glazier, Huntingdon, PA, circa 1840, approximately one-quart-sized pitcher with exceptional squat form including an ovoid body, rounded foot and short collar with rounded rim. Front decorated with a distinctive floral motif, consisting of a central tulip surrounded by a wreath-like floral motif with dotted tips. Collar decorated with a cobalt stripe and a series of leaves. This design is characteristic of pieces made by Henry Glazier of Huntingdon, PA, and can be found on signed examples of his work. The strong Baltimore influence of the decoration supports the idea that Glazier learned to produce stoneware after a period working in the Maryland city. This pitcher is the smallest example by Glazier we have seen, as well as the only we have seen potted in this wonderful form. Horizontal hairline in handle. Some faint crazing at base, which does not extend through to interior, and likely occurred in the firing. H 5 7/8".
