Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Keg Cooler, Stamped "A.J. BUTTLER / MANUFACTERUR / NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ," circa 1870, ovoid keg-form cooler with cobalt-highlighted bands and screw-head-accented bunghole, the front decorated with brushed cobalt flowers emanating from a stump, surrounding the number "5". Maker's mark flanked by cobalt leaves. Unusual form for this maker. Rim chips. Two 7" hairlines extending up reverse. In-the-firing 3" crack on side on cooler. Some tight lines on underside. Tight line near base on reverse. H 15".
