Rare Thomas Warne & Joshua Letts Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed and Coggled Decoration, Stamped "T*W * J*L," South Amboy, NJ, early 19th century, ovoid jar with open loop handles, heavily-tooled shoulder, and coggled column-and-sawtooth motif around rim. Front impressed "T*W * J*L" (for the partnership of Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts), underscored by two impressed leaves. Reverse decorated with two impressed leaves. Maker's mark, impressed decoration, and handle terminals, decorated with strong reddish-brown manganese slip. Rare mark. A good example of early New Jersey stoneware. 7/8" rim chip. A few other smaller rim chips. Exfoliated section to front. Minor base chips. A few small stone pings to surface.
