Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Coggled and Impressed Decoration, Stamped "WARNE / S. AMBOY. N. JERSY," early 19th century, ovoid jug with tooled spout and ribbed handle, decorated with impressed and cobalt-highlighted leaves with scalloped edges, as well as a coggled oval design around the shoulder. Impressed with rare Thomas Warne maker's mark in large letters across the front of the jug. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A fine example of early New Jersey stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in the consignor's family in New Jersey. Essentially as-made condition with a sunken area to right side of jug, as well as a 7/8" spout chip and shallow base chip on reverse, all of which occurred during the firing. H 12".
