Extremely Rare and Important Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER," circa 1860, large-sized ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, lavishly-decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a deer with large antlers and spotted body, standing between two trees on a heavily-detailed lawn. This bold and artistically-rendered design ranks among the very best American stoneware deer decorations known. The grand size of the jar adds to the impact of the design on the viewer. Slip-trailed "6." below rim. A masterpiece of New York State stoneware. 11" spidering crack extending from underneath one handle to bottom left portion of decoration. 9" spidering crack in reverse of jar. Hairlines to sides and reverse, as well as some surface lines, which do not extend through to interior. A 3 3/4" line on right side of front below rim, which is not visible on interior. H 16 7/8".
