Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, attributed to John Poole Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1830, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on one side with an unusual design of a large cobalt "3" surrounded by a scalloped line and tassels. Reverse with brushed flowering vine design bearing circular blossoms. Cobalt brushed over handles. Excellent color. Provenance: Recently found in Virginia. Large loss to rim. Cracks in underside. Cracks and hairlines in body of jar, extending up from base. Numerous small lines throughout surface, probably in-the-firing. Heavy chipping to base. H 15".
