Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Large Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flaring rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a pheasant with long tail, turned head, and speckled breast, perched on the branch of a forked stump. Shrubs with dotted trails flank the base of the stump. Desirable form and size with strong decoration. Provenance: Lynn White Collection, Readfield, ME. Cracks in base on front, underside, and side of churn, extending onto reverse, and front. These cracks are, for the most part, colored, but no decoration has been touched up. 6" colored crack from rim with restored rim chip. Small chip on exterior of rim and several small chips on interior of rim. H 18 1/2".
