NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with sloped shoulder and squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed cobalt pheasant with long-tail, turned head, and speckled breast, perched on the branch of a forked tree stump. Both sides of stump are heavily-shaded, with the base flanked by shrubs. This example is one of the finest one-gallon Norton pheasants we have seen, being exceptionally large and thickly-applied. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example consigned from Maine. Restoration to spout chips. Other minor spout chips and spout edge wear. Crack in underside, which extends up base in four places. Three of these lines extend onto base 3 1/4", 1 1/4", 1 1/4" onto base. The fourth extends up reverse 6 1/8". H 11 1/2".
