Rare and Outstanding Albany, NY Stoneware Advertising Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Albany, NY origin, circa 1830, highly ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout and large brushed cobalt flower, impressed with the elaborate cobalt-highlighted advertising "SMITH & PORTER / WHOLE SALE & RETAIL DEALERS IN. / PAINTS.OILS. DYE STUFFS / DRUGS GLASS. &. / DOMESTIC GOODS. / AT THE OLD STAND. / OF. SMITH &. WILLARD / 394.SOUTH.MARKET.STREET. / ALBANY." A very fine example of early New York State advertising. Provenance: Lynn White Collection, Readfield, ME. Two recessed in-the-firing contact marks on front, measuring 3/4" and 5/8", which are filled with a hard white substance. Thin 1 1/2" X-shaped crack to spout area. Additional 5 1/2" thin crack from spout. A few filled spout chips. Minor in the firing chips to bottom edge. H 13 1/2".
