Outstanding and Extremely Rare Multi-Glazed Redware Cake Mold, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, late 19th century, large-sized, wheel-thrown mold with central tube, decorated with colorful splashed copper and manganese glazes over a cream-colored slip. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. The wall of the vessel was grooved in several places after being thrown on the wheel, creating a lobed design on the interior. This treatment was done to make the mold appear similar to those produced from a plaster mold, as most 19th century examples were. Exceptional size, color, and condition. An extremely rare form in multi-glaze, this mold is the finest Shenandoah Valley example to be offered anywhere in recent years. Literature: Pictured in H.E. Comstock’s The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, p. 284, figure 5.226. Excellent condition with glaze wear to rim and light wear to tip of tube. Retains a remarkably well-preserved glazed surface. H (to top of tube) 6" ; Diameter 11".
