Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Dog Scene, Stamped "WHITES UTICA'," NY State origin, circa 1865, cylindrical crock with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an artistically-rendered cobalt scene depicting a large standing dog with turned head and heavily-shaded body, flanked by a pine tree and tall stump. Various shrubs and ground cover are slip-trailed below. One of the more elaborate Whites Utica dog designs we have seen. Fry to cobalt. 3 1/2" hairline from rim on front. Long in-the-firing separation crack on interior, which does not extend through to exterior. Two minor handle nicks. H 12".
