Very Rare Ovoid Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG," VA origin, circa 1890, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated with an elaborate swag and hanging flower design on the front and back, applied over slip-coated clay. Ovoid jars from this period in Bell stoneware production are highly unusual. Restored crack, which extends partway around base. Two cracks spread off of this crack partway onto underside. 6 1/2", 6", and 2 1/4" hairlines from rim on reverse. A few base chips. Small chip to one handle. Two rim chips. H 14".
